The Importance of Grammar

Sometimes students learn English with too much direct focus on grammar. They get out their grammar books in class and then do exercise after exercise. The results of all this hard work are that students learn some grammar rules quite well in theory but are unable to really speak good English. All too often, when they try to speak English, they repeat the same simple mistakes, which they know in theory all too well.

These days almost all schools have learnt that this direct focus on English grammar does not produce the desired effect, so they switch to practicing the productive skills, mainly speaking but also not forgetting writing.
Finally: we put grammar in it's proper place of importance. We try to understand our grammar mistakes, and learn how to correct ourselves using grammar reference material, and perhaps even grammar exercises, specially chosen to help drill and correct our mistakes in spoken and written English.

This is a healthy approach and should lead to greater improvement all round. No longer will you be an 'expert' in English grammar but a bad English speaker.
